Why Should I Donate?
Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 14,600 Vitalant blood drives have been forced to cancel due to COVID-19, representing about 364,000 uncollected donations. All blood types are needed.
Not only will you be helping make up the shortfall in donations, but you also could be supporting COVID-19 patients.
As the number of coronavirus cases continues to climb, hospital demand for convalescent plasma to help COVID-19 patients is growing too. On average, 1 out of 4 hospitalized COVID-19 patients are currently receiving convalescent plasma. This plasma, collected from recovered COVID-19 patients, is used to treat those with active, severe cases of the virus to give patients an extra boost of fighting power.
Even those who have not been diagnosed with COVID-19 can help. When donors give blood or platelets, they are informed of their antibody status; if positive, Vitalant produces convalescent plasma from the donation. Testing positive for antibodies puts donors on a unique track to donate convalescent plasma regularly – and join others as part of the COVID Rescue Team – to help even more COVID-19 patients. For additional information and to see if you qualify, visit Vitalant.org/COVIDRescueTeam
"I believe the idea that my blood could help save a life is so amazing. Even though I am not a trained medical professional, I can still make a positive impact on others." — Chris, Blood Donor
