Join Vitalant and Action News 5 for a blood drive in honor of Sickle Cell Awareness Month.
September has been designated as Sickle Cell Awareness Month, a month during which we raise awareness of this inherited and incurable disorder that disproportionately affects people of African descent. Patients with sickle cell disease depend on a diverse blood supply because blood donations with a close blood type match are essential and typically found in donors of the same race or similar ethnicity.
A diverse blood supply is crucial to those fighting sickle cell disease. In fact, blood transfusions are one of only a few treatments that help alleviate pain caused by sickle cell disease. When you donate blood at this blood drive, your donation will be screened for the sickle cell trait as part of the Greater Memphis Sickle Cell Partnership to provide awareness and education to the Memphis community on sickle cell disease. We also encourage you to spread the word to your family, friends and neighbors about this opportunity. Learn more.
In collaboration with the Greater Memphis Sickle Cell Partnership:
"I believe the idea that my blood could help save a life is so amazing. Even though I am not a trained medical professional, I can still make a positive impact on others." — Chris, Blood Donor
