Some timeframes of the year are so important they deserve to have their own month!

The winter months bring several challenges for the blood supply. On average, 4,000 fewer donations are given in December due to the holidays, inclement weather and cold and flu season. For this reason, Vitalant has carved out Dec. 15 – Jan. 7 as the 13th Month of the year, to shine light upon the critical need for blood and blood drives.

Why Host?

Every year around the time of his birthday, Bowen's Mom, Emily, hosts a blood drive in his honor. Bowen was born with multiple heart defects and in the first days of his life Bowen received his first blood transfusion. He has since needed more during two subsequent open-heart surgeries to date. Emily is grateful for those who selflessly donate blood.
