Donors of all types are needed to help patients of all blood types. The need is greatest for type O, the most transfused and most compatible when a patient’s type isn’t immediately known.

April is National Volunteer Month, a reminder that the safe and ready blood supply in the U.S. relies primarily on volunteers. At Vitalant, there are many ways to help. A blood donor, John Valentine has racked up more than 2,000 hours of volunteer hours hosting blood drives and volunteering to help at others. Having witnessed a family member’s need for a transfusion last summer, he’s more committed than ever.
“A blood transfusion was to my eyes miraculous - it brought her back from the brink of death,” Valentine said. “Doctors and nurses see it all the time, but rarely do we as donors or volunteers have the privilege of seeing how blood is used. For me, this experience completed the circle."
