The blood supply in the United States is critically low and the majority of the country’s blood centers are reporting significant declines in their blood collections. As the nation confronts new surges of COVID-19 cases, blood services organizations across the country are joining together to urge eligible individuals to make and keep an appointment to donate blood now.
Vitalant Donors Support Wildfire and Hurricane Zones with Blood Donations
Thanks to the generosity of blood donors, Vitalant sent additional units of blood to our locations in the West and South that were forced to temporarily close donation centers and cancel blood drives due to wildfires and Hurricane Sally. In addition, Vitalant has shipped more than 500 blood units so far to other blood centers in the fire and flooding zones to support area hospitals.
Vitalant First to Provide COVID-19 Antibody Positive Rates for 250,000 Blood Donors in Support of Pandemic Response Efforts
To support pandemic response and preparedness efforts, today, Vitalant became the first U.S. blood services provider to release COVID-19 antibody-positive rates of more than 250,000 blood donors, June through July 2020. Those with a positive diagnostic or antibody test result are encouraged to consider registering to become a convalescent plasma donor and potentially help patients fight the disease.
