How to use the Communication Preference Center

What is a preference center?

The preference center allows Vitalant donors to control what types of communication channels they wish to receive. You may choose to receive or unsubscribe from the following channels: emails, text messages/SMS, phone calls and/or mail (letters/postcards).*
You also may choose to have limited communications based on your interests. For most communication channels, you can choose to receive or unsubscribe for the following categories:

  • Critical/Emergency Need – Alerts you when donors are critically needed for patients. Special offers for gift cards, exclusive apparel and more are often included.
  • Holiday Need for Donors – Alerts you when donors are needed around national holidays. Special offers for gift cards, exclusive apparel and more are often included.
  • General Need for Donors – Regularly scheduled messages about ongoing needs and opportunities for you to donate, and donor thank-you gifts.
  • Educational (includes the quarterly email donor newsletter The Vital Donor) – Infrequent messages including newsletters, patient stories, medical advances and surveys.
  • Fundraising – Messages about ongoing fundraising activities to which you can contribute.
  • Research – Opportunities to participate in research surveys and studies.

*At this time, Vitalant donors in New Jersey and New York are only able to change their email preferences through the “Unsubscribe Or Change Your Communication Preferences” link that is at the bottom of emails sent from Vitalant. Donors in those states who want to update text messages/SMS, phone calls and/or mail (letters/postcards) should call our Customer Contact Center at 877-258-4825.  

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I access the preference center to choose my preferences?

You must have an online donor account. Instructions for creating your account can be found here. Once you log in to your donor account, you may modify your communications preferences by clicking on the “preferences” tab at the top of the page. From that page, you can choose the communications you receive from Vitalant for text, telephone, email and/or mail (letters/postcards).

To unsubscribe from a type of communication, you must UNCHECK the box to the left of that communication channel. In the example below for the “EMAIL” section, the donor unchecked the boxes next to “Holiday Need for Donors,” “General Need for Donors” and “Research” to unsubscribe from those categories of messages. This donor left three categories checked – “Critical/Emergency Need,” “Educational” and “Fundraising” to receive emails about those topics.

The toggle switch in the top right corner above will unsubscribe or subscribe you for all categories of communications for each channel when you click it. Each communication section has a similar toggle.  

IMPORTANT: You MUST click on the “Submit now” button in the lower left corner of each category after checking/unchecking the preference boxes for your selections to be saved.

I unsubscribed from emails/texts. Why do I still get appointment reminders/confirmations?

When you unsubscribe from emails and/or texts, you are unsubscribing from marketing emails from Vitalant. However, federal regulations still allow certain types of communications. You may still get emails or texts about upcoming appointments. You also may hear from our medical affairs office regarding your donation.

I unsubscribed from emails/texts. Why do I still get emails about blood drives?

When you unsubscribe from emails and/or texts, you are unsubscribing from marketing emails specifically from Vitalant. However, you may still get emails from blood drive coordinators about their blood drives. These emails are sent outside of Vitalant’s system directly from the blood drive coordinator. To unsubscribe from those emails, you must contact the person who sent them.

To change current preferences, log in to your donor account.* This page is easily reached from Vitalant’s homepage by clicking the “Log In” button on the top left. Then, go to the “PREFERENCES” tab and update preferences for text, phone calls and mail (letters/postcards).

How can I change my preferences?

I updated my preferences in my donor account, but I continue to get messages for which I opted out. What happened?

Please be sure to UNCHECK messages you do NOT want to receive. You also can use the toggle button in the top right of each channel to opt in or opt out of all messages through that channel.
